Six Britons Sentenced to Prison for One Million Pound Fire Attack on Warehouse Holding Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid

Six Britons acting for Russia’s Wagner group have been handed jail terms for setting fire to a London-based storage unit that was storing humanitarian aid intended for Ukraine.

Sentencing and Roles

While delivering the sentences, the presiding judge at the central criminal court remarked that they had orchestrated a “series of terrorist and sabotage acts” in the interests of the Russian government.

Dylan Earl was given a seventeen-year jail term with an additional six years on supervised release due to his “primary involvement”. Jake Reeves, a resident of Croydon, South London, was sentenced to twelve years in jail with an additional year on supervised release. Their admitted crimes resulted in them being the initial persons to be convicted under the 2023 National Security Act.

Jakeem Rose, also from Croydon, was sentenced to a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, 23, a Thornton Heath, South London local, was given nine years and Ugnius Asmena, who was homeless, was given seven years in prison. The trio were each convicted of serious fire-setting and received a further year on supervised release by the court.

Ashton Evans drug dealer from Newport in Gwent, was jailed for nine years with an extra year on extended licence after being convicted of withholding information about acts of terrorism connected to a separate scheme in the Mayfair area.

Incident Specifics

The deliberate fire on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London put 60 firefighters at risk and caused one million pounds worth of destruction in March last year.

The proceedings revealed that Earl, 21 and the 24-year-old Reeves did not leave their bedrooms while organising the attack for the Wagner mercenary organization, acting on behalf of the Russian government.

The individuals involved targeted the warehouse because it was being used to supply emergency relief and StarLink satellite equipment to Ukraine.

When the same Ukrainian company was subjected to an intentional fire 10 days later in Madrid, investigators from the Metropolitan Police's anti-terror unit assumed control of the probe.

Evidence and Further Plans

When Earl was taken into custody, police analysis of his cellphone uncovered he had videos of the storage facility blaze being initiated and was in communication with the Wagner organization on Telegram, via an account with the usernames ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike alias’.

Some of the communications showed that reconnaissance for further “missions”, involving arson attacks at a restaurant and wine store in Mayfair district owned by the Russian opposition figure Evgeny Chichvarkin had already taken place. The employment of explosive devices to harm structures was also deliberated.

Investigators discovered that the defendant Earl was also raising the possibility of kidnapping the dissident Chichvarkin and “sending him back to Russia to face prison”.

The individual involved in narcotics from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had talked about another potential attack in the Czech nation.

In a residence inspection, law enforcement found a flag of Russia, over twenty thousand pounds in currency and cocaine with a market value of approximately thirty-four thousand pounds.

Motivations and Judicial Remarks

The court heard he was a participant in numerous pro-Russian propaganda channels and was driven by “plain and severe avarice”.

“This legal matter concerns the attempts by the Russian government to gain pernicious global influence using online platforms to recruit disruptors vast distances from Moscow.”

She determined the fire incident had a “link to terrorism” irrespective of if the individuals responsible were aware of it. The Wagner group is proscribed by the UK government as a terrorist group.
